Night Fright

The four of us sat in the darkness on the large bed of my grandmother's guest room. I was the youngest out of the cousins and so I was the most afraid. In the last hour they'd recounted many a good ghost story and even played Bloody Mary.
They told me it was all in my head when I said I heard a rustle outside. I stared at the big, curtained windows. I was sure something terrible was out there.
Finally my sister went to look. I remember thinking, when she blanched and came back, that maybe they were trying to scare me more. Then she said she thought she'd seen someone hiding in the bushes.
The other cousins checked as I lay shivering in bed, fear consuming me.
"Whatever it is it's gone now." they announced. Silly me, always afraid. From the other side of the house came a low boom and then a sound like wood being carved.
Everyone shrieked. We were all huddled together now, certain something was coming. I remembered that my mother was sleeping on the couch, so much closer to the odd noise.
We decided to go ask her what it was since the noise had stopped. With the lights on we were less afraid though and our fear felt silly. We went to sleep. I had terrible nightmares about seeing a mans face in the window, long tangled hair and crazed eyes.
The next morning we were all sure it had just been a night fright, although I was a bit unsure. Over breakfast, my favorite biscuits in rich country gravy, my mother told Grandma of a disturbance.
"There was a drunk man outside last night that scared me. He kept trying to get in the house." My cousins and sister glanced at each other uneasily.
"Did he mean any harm?" Grandma looked worried.
"At about three am it sounded like he tried to break down the door, he had a big knife with him."
Grandma called the police. We sat shock still. What if he'd broken in our window with his big knife? Visitor Rating:
