The Lottery Posted by prinzeztutu Date Posted: 10/31/2009
Everyone in the village met in the field as usual. The little boys gathered large smooth stones in preparation. The elder said, "Is everyone here?". Affirmative. The girls clung to their mothers, silent tears streaming down their faces.
The Jones family was first. The father, Ben Jones, went up to the black box. He fished a piece of paper from the box. A look of relief spread across his face. The paper was blank. One by one, each father of every family went up.
Then, it was the Marshals' turn. John Marshall stepped up to the box. He picked up his paper, and his face twisted in pain. He held up the paper. It had a small black dot. Each member of the family now got a paper.
Procedure. "I hope it's not Judy" said one of the girls watching. One by one, they each put their papers back in the box, one by one, they each took another paper. When it was Judy's turn, she walked up without a sign of doubt on her face, switching her skirt. She looked at the paper. Shock. "Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon," mumbled the elder. "no, its not fair!" shouted mother. "She didn't have time! She's too young! No! Please!" But no one listened.
Judy looked around and began to run. Someone threw the first rock. It hit her head with a clunk. Blood gushed. She turned to tell her mother she loved her, and as she opened her mouth, another rock flew down her throat. No escape. Another hit her ribs. No struggle. Another hit her stomach. No heartbeat. Good crops. Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon. Visitor Rating:
