Old Funeral Home Nightmares
Posted by amylynn
Date Posted: 10/26/2009

My brother was 14 when he started running to lose weight. He ran every single night, mile after mile. He kept this up, even after he got down to the size he wanted.

Well one night, he had to run a different route because of road work. He would have to pass the old funeral home. It was a lonely and forgotten place, stuck out in the middle of nowhere. It hadn't been used in over 20 years.

At 2 a.m., he came bursting in yelling for our parents. He woke the whole house up, including me. My mom switched on the light and asked him what was wrong with him. The look on his face was complete horror.

"Sh-she... she was... screaming! I tried... I couldn't... I couldn't even see her!" This was all he managed to say. He kept attempting to explain everything, but he was so scared that he just kept stammering and stuttering.
He claimed that he heard a girl screaming and sobbing in pain when he passed by the old funeral home. It scared him so badly, that he quit running for three weeks. Finally, he started up again. But he wouldn't dare go at night. After passing by day after day, and nothing happening, he decided to start running at night again.
Bad idea.
He didn't come bursting in at 2 a.m. this time. In fact, he didn't come in at all.

We looked and looked for him until noon. Just as my mom started to notify the police... my grandma called. She lived about a half a mile away from the old funeral home.
"You get this child help RIGHT NOW!", she shrieked into the phone.
Apparently, my brother had woke my grandma up, knocking fiercely on her door. He had that same look of horror on his face. She took him to the hospital, and we arrived soon after she called.

He had red marks and bruises all over him. No cuts, just marks and bruises. He refused to tell us what happened. He just shook his head and said, "no".
He stopped running completely. In fact, he wouldn't leave the house unless he really had to, like for school or something.

And then the nightmares started.

He started waking up in the middle of the night, sneaking into the living room to sleep on the couch so he would be closer to me and our parents. This was so strange to me, because he had never seemed afraid of anything.
In his nightmare, he was running his old route. It was dark and silent outside. Then out of nowhere, he starts hearing a deep, heavy base sound. Like a low, steady drum. "Boom... boom... boom"... He tries to run faster and escape... "BOOM! BOOM!" It gets louder and closer. He looks behind him and sees a hearse for a funeral following him. He noticed the casket, but there was something... different... about it. There was nobody in it! It was open and empty... and this hearse was after him! He runs in the house and into his room, locks the door, and rushes into his bed. He pulls the blankets over his head. The booming continues, on and on, and the hearse lingers, as if it's waiting and won't give up. He just shivers beneath the blankets and cries, then he wakes up.

These nightmares happened over and over again, and it was the same nightmare every time, except the last time he had it, which was right before we moved. At the end of this nightmare, he was hiding under the blankets again... but he heard that scream again, right outside his window. It stopped abruptly and said, "Leave... leave, but I'll get you... I'll find you... you... wait"... and he awoke. The dreams didn't bother him again after we moved to our new house.

That was 9 years ago. Since then, my brother did not speak of any of that stuff again, and the nightmares no longer bothered him. He wouldn't talk about the funeral home, the screaming, or the nightmares. He had almost completely forgotten about it after about 5 years passed. He was back to his usual 'I'm-not-scared-of-nothing' self. He now has a wife and son.
So it seems like everything was fine, right?

...well, I got a phone call last night at 2 a.m.

"Amy", I heard my brother say. His voice was shaking.

"What? What is it?" I asked.

"...The nightmare is back..."
