THE MORRISON HOUSE
As a child, it's the most fun and the most scary time of the year...Halloween.
This particular October 31st had a different sense to it all together. Something scary and foreboding. It all centered around the most haunted house in the city...The Morrison House. Every city or town has a Morrison house. It's usually an old, beat-up wreck of a house that should have been torn down long ago, but is still standing. This house however had it's own spookiness to it. It was an old Victorian home with the big porch and creaky stairs, yet nearly 200 years of weather and time had little effect on it. It still looked the way it did the day it was built.
It was the kind of house that had history to it. It was rumored that every 30 years or so, the house would come to life on Halloween and claim a victim. Some poor unexpecting trick-or-treater would vanish without a trace. 30 years ago to this day, a group of kids visited the house and goaded one of them into knocking on the door. The kids told their parents, and the police of a hideous creature that opened the door and grabbed their friend. They told of the mutilation of their friend. Of course, the police checked the house and found what they expected...nothing. Nobody lived there. No blood or sign of struggle at the front door.
The tales of the survivors were dismissed as the childrens overactive imaginations. The missing child was never found in each case, and as time went on, all was forgotten. Not so by the now parents of the kids who were about to visit the Morrison house. All of them had had extensive therapy. All of them told the tale to their children. All of them warned their children to never set foot on the porch of the Morrison house.
This Halloween, history was to repeat itself again...
Michael and his friends were about 10 years old. They all had bags full of candy and decided to call it a night, when one of Michael's friends came up with a great idea..."Let's visit the Morrison house!". They all argued the reasons why they shouldn't go there, and all told the tales that their parents and others had told them until they reached the house. It was then that Michael's friends dared him to go to the door and tap the knocker on the door 13 times. It's was well known that by doing this you could summon the creature in the house. After alot of teasing and name calling, Michael reluctantly agreed to do this.
As he opened the cast iron gate and made his way slowly down the walkway to the house, Michael remembered one of the tales about the house. It was rumored that old man Morrison was a well-to-do man about town, but some bad investments had left him and his family broke, with the house being all they had left that they could sell to pay off their debts. It is said that old man Morrison was so depressed about the idea of selling the house that he had built, that he made a deal with the devil himself. He wanted no one else to ever own his home and live in it but him, and the devil was only too happy to grant this wish. There was a price to be paid to the devil however, and in this case it was the souls of his family. Due and payable immediately after the signing of the contract. It was then that old man Morrison killed his four children and his wife with his rifle. After doing so, Morrison felt such guilt that he took his own life as well.
Mr Morrison did get to live in his house alone, just as he'd asked for in the contract. Only he didn't expect to be a tortured soul trapped in a never aging house....
Michael made it to the stairs that led to the door. As he started up the stairs, the hair on his neck began to stand up and his flesh began to crawl. He looked back at his friends who were urging him on, and laughing. Michael made it to the porch and came face-to-face with the infamous door. It took all of his courage to make his shaking hand grab the knocker and begin to summon the beast.
With every pound of the knocker, Michael felt a new wave of fear. One-Two-Three...Four-Five-Six...Seven-Eight-Nine...Ten-Eleven...Michael stopped. He looked back at his friends who now were no longer laughing, but looking at Michael in awe. Michael knew that if he completed this quest, he would be well liked and respected by his friends. He'd be the bravest person alive.
His friends seemed frozen and motionless as they waited for him to continue...Michael turned back around and continued...Twelve....Thirteen......Nothing happened.
Michael was frozen where he stood. He had managed to do what no one ever did and lived to tell about it. After what seemed like an eternity, he turned back around to receive his hero's congratualations from his friends..."Look!" Michael said proudly, "There's no monster! I'm still alive! You guys are all a bunch of fraidy-cats!!!".
Michael looked into the faces of his friends. He saw the look. The frozen look a person gets when they are scared half to death. With their mouths hanging open, each of his friends were pointing back at the door, and all had a frozen scream on their lips. Michael turned back around to see a giant claw like hand engulf his face as everything went to black. Michael knew then, that he would never see his friends again...
The house once again fell silent.
