A Cold Kiss

I've never believed in ghosts and I still don't. But I do believe that people who have died can come back as if they were a guardian angel or something.

I was home alone and it was early in the morning. It was pouring rain, and the gravel road outside my ranch had turned to mud and rocks. Upstairs, the floorboards creak and squeak, even with the slightest touch. I wasn't all that surprised when I kept hearing them do so. "Must be the wind," I thought. Then I heard whistling. I froze and quickly got up. My dog, who is a tough pit bull, didn't do anything, so I thought that it was just my imagination (I was reading scary stories off of this website actually).

About 20 minutes had gone by and I heard a door creak open upstairs. Again I shot up from my seat, and I quietly looked upstairs. My bathroom door was open. My dog Tank then started growling, and I knew something wasn't right. I slowly and quietly took my dog and myself toward the front door. My plan was to run to the nearest house and ask for help. As I reached for the door knob, I heard, "Lily." Lily is my name, by the way. I froze and didn't move. My eyes darted around the room looking to see where the noise came from. I turned my head to the left and I felt something grab me and turn me around and kiss me. A long, hard, romantic kiss. I closed my eyes and fell into this lovely trance. I didn't even know what or whom I was kissing (I was being an idiot). I suddenly felt cold, not scared, just cold, like I was missing something or I was lonely. My hands became numb and I couldn't feel my toes. The kiss ended and I slowly opened my eyes. "S-S-Shane?" I whispered. Shane was a boy who had been in the same class as me for seven years. He had died just a few months ago in a car crash. I loved him ever since we first met. "H-hi," I said with a soft smile. Shane smiled back. "Wait for me, and I'll wait for you," he said. He ran out the front door and I ran to the nearest window and pulled back the curtains to watch him. Even though he was running, he didn't leave any footprints in the mud. "I'll wait," I whispered, "I'll wait...."

Whenever I'm alone, I can feel him with me. Not as a ghost, but like a guardian angel almost. I can usually only see him in a reflection on something. Not a mirror, though. He always kisses my cheek and whispers, "I'll wait for you," in my ear. Then he rests his hand on my shoulder. I've often tried to take hold of his hand, but I never feel it. Sometimes, he'll just talk to me in the reflection or smile. He'll even kiss me on the lips again and I cry. How long do I have to wait?
