Love Me

"Come on, Sarah!" bemoaned Jeremy Kapinsky. "We've been dating two weeks now. When are you going to loosen up?"

Sarah squirmed from her boyfriend Jeremy's grasping hands. "I'm not ready yet, Jeremy. I told you I'm slow about these things."

Jeremy flung himself into the driver seat of his Ford Viper and folded his arms across his broad chest in frustration.

Sarah Applewhite only wanted one thing: to be loved. Not just any love, like the love of a parent for a child. But pure, ecstatic love, the kind of love that left one frenzied, crazed, rapturous. Her new boyfriend, Jeremy, seemed nice enough. They had met two weeks earlier at a friend's house warming party. He seemed interested only in her. He made her feel special. Still, she wasn't about to lose her virginity to just anyone. She needed time. She needed to know he was the right man.

"Let's just go back to your place," Jeremy grunted. And he sped off at great speed.

“Do you want to watch TV?" Sarah asked, plopping next to Jeremy who sat brooding on the couch in Sarah’s small one-bedroom apartment.

"Sure," Jeremy shrugged. He was a man of few words. Sarah liked him for that as much as she liked his curly black hair, dark diaphanous eyes and strong physique.

They watched television quietly until Jeremy, his manhood getting the best of him, put his arm around Sarah’s shoulder. Normally Sarah would allow—even enjoy—such attention from her new boyfriend, but this time she new hew was revved up. He wanted more than just to snuggle.

“Jeremy! Please!” She tossed his arm from her shoulder and looked at him with warning in her blue eyes.

“That’s it!” Jeremy huffed. He stood up decidedly and looked down at Sarah. “I’ve had enough. We’re both adults, for chrissakes! You act like you’re still in high school! I’m out of here!”

“But Jeremy—!” It was too late. Jeremy was gone. Tears pooled in Sarah’s eyes. She slumped down into the couch and began sobbing. Once again, she had lost another man. It was the same thing each time. They wanted to be intimate right away, but Sarah always wanted to wait. It never worked out in her favor.

Forlorn, Sarah began channel surfing as tears streamed down her red cheeks. Despite having over one hundred channels, nothing interesting was on. Yawning from having shed so many tears, Sarah began to fall sleepy. She lied on the couch and fell into a sleep. An hour elapsed when she awoke with a start. She looked around, confused. Realizing where she was and what had transpired earlier with Jeremy, she decided to retire for the night. But just as she was about to shut off the television in frustration, something caught her attention.

A local news reporter was giving a news update. Two people had just been brutally murdered execution style, the fifth such murder in so many weeks, and all in the same neighborhood—Sarah’s neighborhood! The suspect, still on the loose, was described by a witness to be in his mid-twenties and wore a tan overcoat. Based on the crime scene investigation, police believed the man sustained a fork wound somewhere to his mid section.

"Oh my God!" Sarah exclaimed, clasping her hand to her mouth. "How horrible!"

"Stuff like that happens everyday.”

Sarah nearly jumped out of her clothes. She hit the floor and stood looking up at Jeremy who was standing behind the couch with an odd smile on his face.

“J-Jeremy,” Sarah stuttered, struggling to stand up. “W-what are you doing here?”

“I wanted to come back to apologize,” he said softly, the eerie smile still etched on his face, sinister looking with the glow from the television. “I was wrong to be so demanding of you. Will you forgive me?”

“Why, of…of course,” Sarah assured him, nervously. “But how did you get in?”

“You forgot to lock the door. It’s dangerous for a single woman to leave her door unlocked. You should be more careful. Especially with that serial killer on the loose. Suppose I was the murderer?”

Sarah simpered uneasily. “Oh, don’t be silly. Besides, with you here, I—I should be safe.”

Jeremy neared her. His breath was sour. His hair was moist and matted, as if he had been sweating. His eyes were unusually lustrous from the night time chill. Sarah wanted to look away, but she wasn’t sure why. He placed his hands on her trembling shoulders.

“Sarah. I was wrong to be such a pig. Let’s watch TV. And I promise I won’t lay a hand on you.”

Sarah looked to the television. The news update was still filling in the details of the double homicide. A camera was roving over the brutal scene of blood and two body bags with police vehicles everywhere. She winced.

“No,” she blurted. “Let’s not watch anymore of that.” She reached for the remote control off the coffee table and switched off the television. Suddenly she felt frightened and cold. She leaned into Jeremy. “Hold me, Jeremy,” she whispered into his tight chest. “I’m scared.” Instinctively, Jeremy wrapped his arms around her.

“Everything will be alright,” Jeremy soothed her, stroking her fine blond hair. “I’m here. I’m here.”

At that moment Sarah realized that Jeremy wasn’t just some guy. He had rushed back to apologize, to seek her forgiveness, and now he was comforting her with kind words and caresses. No, Jeremy wasn’t just some guy. Jeremy was someone special. She began to quiver.

“Jeremy,” Sarah said into his ear, tears filling her eyes. “Take me to the bedroom, will you?”

Jeremy pulled Sarah away and looked at her forcefully. “Are you sure?” he asked, his eyes wide with amazement and delight.

Sarah dropped her head. “Yes,” she imparted, demurely. “I was wrong to have pushed you away before. I want to…I want to make love with you.”

Jeremy wasted no time doing as Sarah requested. He lifted her in his strong arms and carried her into her bedroom, and tossed her onto her queen-sized bed. With the lights off, there was nothing but the glow of the half-moon cutting through the Venetian blinds. They were in the raptures of love making within minutes when suddenly Sarah heard a thump coming from the living room. She pulled Jeremy off her and looked at him.

“What was that?” she asked, alarmed.

“What was what?” Jeremy asked, confused.

“That noise. There. There it was again. Did you hear it? Go see what it is, Jeremy. Please. I’m afraid.”

Jeremy reluctantly acquiesced to Sarah’s demand. Naked, he stalked into the living room and switched on the light. He found nothing. But one thing struck him as odd. A large tan overcoat he had never seen before lied on the floor near the front door. He picked up the coat and examined it. Deciding it was nothing, he locked the front door and expectantly returned to the bedroom. He almost forgot all about the noise and the overcoat when to his dismay he saw Sarah on her side—sound asleep.

“Damn,” he whispered. He went into the adjoining bathroom and washed his face, hoping a splash of cold water would assuage his disappointment. When he opened the bathroom door, the light from the bathroom slashed across Sarah’s nude body. She was exposed from the hips up. He stood examining her pleasant body when something struck him as odd. There was a strange marking on her left waist. He had never seen her naked before, but the shape of the markings was unusual. He went to examine it more closely, lightly touching it with his finger tip. At first he thought it looked like two bite marks, but he deduced a bite mark would be closer together. Suddenly Sarah stirred from her sleep and rolled to her back. Jeremy jumped back alarmed. Sarah rubbed her eyes and spoke with a grainy voice, not her own soft, feminine voice. She reached under the sheets and branded a sharp knife.

“Sarah!” Jeremy cried in bewilderment. “W—what…”

“Love me, Jeremy.” She spoke hauntingly, as if her words materialized not from her own mouth but from a distant nightmare. “Love me….”

The knife lifted effortlessly, and with equally ease slashed into Jeremy’s neck, cutting into his jugular. Instantly he dropped to his knees as blood gushed from his wound like a geyser.

“Love me.” Another slash, this one across his forehead. He fell completely over, his body convulsing its last electrical current of life. Sarah stood over him, her naked body dripping in his blood, the knife poised over Jeremy’s corpse.

The next thing Sarah remembered was entering work where two plainclothes police officers were awaiting here. Her colleagues, stunned, watched on in silence. “Ms. Applewhite… You’re under arrest….”

“But for what?”

“The serial murder of Jeremy Kapinsky and five others.”
