The House on Travis Posted by GattiGirl Date Posted: 06/27/2005
My husband and I were very excited about our first home. It was a pier and beam home and dated back to the 1930's. I loved everything about old homes and couldn't wait to get settled in.
At that time, we had a male Springer Spaniel named Bailey and a white cat with two different colored eyes named Socrates. Since we were unable to have children, these animals were our pride and joy. We had a wonderful bond with them and could always tell what they wanted by the look on their faces.
I was a college student at the time, but spent a great deal of time in the home. I took great pride in my decorating skills and loved being a steadfast homemaker.
I was busy doing laundry one afternoon when I was alone. As with all pier and beam homes, my footsteps creaked and echoed with each step. I could always tell the diffence between my footsteps and someone elses. The animals did not weigh enough to make much sound through the house. As I was leaving my bedroom, I heard the creaks and moans of the wood under my feet. But there were other sounds in the distance. They were quick little pounds on the floor as if were someone were running across the room. They were getting closer to me and by the time I reached the doorjam, I startled and felt a presence behind me. I felt a cold breath on my bare neck. I quickly turned to look behind me and then the scariest thing happened to me.
This is the only way I can describe it. I think everyone has accidently bumped into someone when they weren't looking. That moment when everyone realizes they're going to collide with another person, is what it felt like. My arms flew up to protect my face, and I dug the balls of my bare feet dug into the carpet. It felt as if hit a wall. Then there was a brief assault on all my senses. There was total darkness in my line of vision. My mouth tasted bitter and foul. There was piercing scream in my ears. There was a smell like death (similar to a nursing home) and I was trembling cold from the inside out. I felt dirty and ashamed of myself. It was nasty. It's a too common word, but it's the perfect word to describe the overall experience. And it wasn't completely over.
The animals were close and extremely agitated. The cat was staring at something that wasn't there. His eyes were buldging, ears were laid back, and tail straight up and fluffed in anger. His mouth was dripping with saliva as he hissed at the nothingness. Bailey was hunkered down into a fetal position but looked in the same direction and whimpered in fear.
Then as quickly as it started it ended. It was truly the most scariest thing that has ever happened to me. I literally ran into a ghost and it was not a nice one.
We did live in that house for about 4 years. There were other strange happenings that were just as wierd but not near as scary. I have never told anyone this story for fear of being ridiculed or classified as a "freak". My husband was not exposed to any of it. I am certain there was an evil presence as well as an innocent one. I saw a little girl once in the back room, but only for an instant.
I think of the house often and hope to visit it again someday. Visitor Rating:
