The Job

"I love days like these", I thought to myself, as I sat on a park bench. It was really lovely this time of year. I’ve always loved the cold, being from a place as hot as hell. It really was nice to just sit out in the cold for a while.

I pulled out my pocket watch and checked the time, quarter after twelve. I had a good ten minutes. I watched the children in the park having a snowball fight, it was quite amusing to say the least. I always found the children more
interesting than their adult counterparts….just sitting there reading their newspapers or on their darn phones. Why not have a snowball fight of their own? Or are they just too "old" for that.

I’m pretty old though I may not look it, and I still would like to join them in their little war, but I was here on business and couldn’t miss the man I was waiting for.

"Five minutes to go", I thought,
I watched as a shady looking van pulled up in front of me, it's driver was balding and fat… late forty’s. The bench was located right next to a water fountain that a young girl was drinking
out of.

"Hey, hey you… little girl", the man said.
"Me?"
"Yeah you, have you seen a puppy running around here? He got off his leash and I’ve been really worried about him."

"No, I haven’t, sorry mister", the little girl replied.
"Oh, well could you help me look?", the man asked.
"Um, Ok", the little girl said sliding open the door to the van and stepping inside.

"Three minutes", I thought to myself
A man, I assumed was the girl’s father came running towards the van screaming “STOP!”
The driver peeled out as fast as his van would take him. The father managed to grab hold of the driver’s window just before the van sped off, the father and the driver fought over the
steering wheel and the van slammed into the side of a building, the van burst into flames.

I stood and walked toward the flaming heap, "right on time", I exclaimed.
"What do you mean?", said the little girl who was being cradled by her father.

"Oh nothing, little one", I said with a smile. I grabbed the driver and stood him up. "David Fitzgerald I presume?"

The fat man nodded. I pulled out a stamp and stamped his head, it said "Rejected" in big red letters, and the ground opened up and swallowed him whole.

I approached the father. "Guan and Rebecca Choe?", I asked.
"Yes?", the father said in a frantic, horrified voice clutching his daughter in his arms as tight as he could.

"I’m afraid you’re going to have to come with me Mr.Choe. Your time has come".

"WHAT ABOUT MY DAUGHTER?", he yelled teary eyed.

"It’s not her time yet….I’ll send her back to her body as soon as the medics can revive her".

"Can I stay with her until they do? Please? I beg you."

"Of course you can, I’m not heartless", I replied.
He stood there cradling his daughter in his arms. Lots of I love yous were exchanged as aIwaited to take Mr. Choe. Finally the paramedics got her heart beating and I sent her soul back into her body. Mr. Choe looked at me and then back at his daughter who was starting to wake up. He smiled as I took out my stamps.

"Is she going to be alright?", he asked.

"Don’t worry, she’ll be fine. They’ll drive her to Saint Jones Hospital, and they’ll give her the best treatment they possibly can".

He smiled again as I pressed the stamp to his forehead. It said "Approved" in gold letters and he faded away.

I sat back down at my bench and checked my list. My next appointment wasn’t until two more days, at Saint Jones hospital.
